Actor Gene Hackman passed away at the age of 95, possibly a week after the death of his wife, Betsy Arakawa, due to hantavirus pulmonary syndrome, according to authorities in New Mexico on Friday.
Forensic physician Heather Jarrell mentioned that, based on the circumstances, it is believed that Arakawa died first, on February 11, while Hackman died on February 18. Hackman, who suffered from Alzheimer’s, was in poor health with a significant heart disease that was likely the cause of his death.
Both were found dead in their home in Santa Fe, New Mexico, and while it was initially thought that hantavirus might have been the cause, it was determined that Arakawa died from pulmonary syndrome and that the pills found on the countertop were not related to her death.
The cause of death of their dog, found near Arakawa, is still unknown, but veterinarian Erin Phipps indicated that animals do not contract hantavirus and speculated that it may have died of starvation.
Gene Hackman, a Hollywood legend, winner of two Academy Awards for his roles in 'The French Connection' and 'Unforgiven,' was one of the most versatile and popular actors of his generation. His legacy in the film industry will endure as an essential part of cinematic history.
These tragic losses of Gene Hackman and Betsy Arakawa have shocked the entertainment world, leaving a void in the industry that will be hard to fill. May they rest in peace.
